Why recycling facilities keep burning: Understanding the risks

Recycling

In this IIL property webinar, Lee Dumford explains the processes, materials and operational challenges that make recycling facilities uniquely exposed to fire. Aimed at insurers and brokers, this webinar provides an overview of recycling risks, highlighting process types, key hazards, common loss scenarios, and practical considerations for underwriting and risk assessment.

Recycling facilities play a vital role in the circular economy, recovering and processing a wide range of materials that would otherwise go to landfill. However, the combination of combustible materials, mechanical processing equipment, lithium-ion batteries, dust generation and large stockpiles creates a unique and challenging risk environment, with fires occurring more frequently than in many other industries.

Many losses arise from a combination of operational, housekeeping and storage issues, often resulting in significant property damage, business interruption and environmental impacts. For insurers and brokers, understanding how recycling facilities operate, the hazards associated with different waste streams, and the drivers behind major losses is essential for effective underwriting, risk selection and loss prevention.

Learning objectives:

  • Understand the main types of recycling processes and waste materials

  • Summarise the principal hazards associated with recycling facilities

  • Recognise effective loss prevention and protection strategies
