Latest developments in flight crew training

In this IIL aviation webinar, Carey Edwards gives an overview of the critical importance of introducing CBTA or EBT (competency-based training and assessment/evidence-based training) correctly in an aviation operation. In this session, attendees can learn why these programmes were developed, what they are and the benefits of implementing them successfully, so that airlines and other operators can see a step change in flight safety.

CBTA/EBT were developed from the recognition that current pilot training was not fit for purpose and did not address the needs of both modern high-tech FBW aircraft or the current operational environment. There was also a recognition that many accidents or incidents were caused by events outside of the normal training regime, such as 'black swan' events that meant crews were ill-prepared to manage the situation. The essence of CBTA is the training of specific competencies rather than tasks, so that pilots develop a greater resilience to manage events that may be unfamiliar. From this basic premise, these programmes have developed other principles to support this, such as an emphasis on training rather than checking, a greater emphasis on human factors and the use of facilitation as a training technique. There is a drive towards continuous improvement through the training process and development of a culture that is motivational to both pilots and trainers.

However, many operators have made some critical mistakes which threatened to undermine any benefits they may have gained. Primary amongst these is overcomplicating the whole process, which has meant that people are not only confused but overburdened. Furthermore, they use incorrect competency frameworks and assessment processes and have not managed to get their Regulators on board. Recommendations for how CBTA and EBT programmes can be implemented will be presented and how insures can help operators achieve real benefits for these.
