Start-up reinsurers: From little acorns mighty oaks grow
Join us in the Old Library at Lloyd’s to hear Cathal Carr, OAK Global CEO, speaking about the journey of launching a start-up reinsurer in the 2020s.
When the reinsurance market turned following Hurricane Ian in 2022, a new generation of start-up reinsurers was anticipated, but failed to materialise. Despite the efforts of many, only a handful were successful in raising capital and launching a business. Why did OAK Global succeed, where others failed? Following the launch of OAK Global’s second syndicate less than a year after its launch, it seems it is already on pace to prove that 'from little acorns mighty oaks grow'. But what is the difference between the very limited class of 2022, vs. the class of 1992, and the classes of the 1800s and 1900s?
Learning objectives:
- Learn how changing market conditions can create opportunities for start-up reinsurance ventures
- Understand the role of Lloyd's in facilitating the creation of new syndicates
- Explore the opportunities and challenges of launching a new reinsurer in the 2020s
