Place of refuge for ships in distress - is the future bright?

Tuesday 7 November 2017, 1:15 pm - 2:00 pm
The Old Library, Lloyd's
Hugh Shaw OBE, The Secretary of State's Representative for Maritime Salvage and Intervention, Maritime & Coastguard Agency
Marine & Energy

In this IIL marine & energy lecture Hugh Shaw OBE described the current UK practices for dealing with places of refuge and work being undertaken within the EU and internationally.

In his presentation Hugh outlined the challenges for Governments and Insurance / Salvage sectors when dealing with places of refuge incidents. He also briefly referred to UK policy and included a number of case studies including MSC NAPOLI, MSC FLAMINIA and HOEGH OSAKA. In addition, Hugh gave a brief insight into progress being made within the EU and across global Asia. He concluded by offering his cautiously optimistic view that momentum has been made in the last few years and provided complacency does not set it, then there was every reason the future should be bright.

By the end of this lecture members would have gained an insight into:

  • Current UK policy and practices
  • EU guidelines and co-operation
  • Global initiatives for addressing POR challenges
