In this IIL claims lecture, Jason Reeves and Deepa Sutherland discussed the insurance effects of climate change, US and international climate change litigation, the lessons learned from historic liability insurance exposures, and recommendations on action to be taken by the insurance industry to meet these climate change challenges.

For all industries, the effects of climate change are an existential threat. The insurance industry being no exception, this webinar will highlight why climate change is as much a business issue as it is an environmental one. The effects of environmental change will bring with it a number of new exposures and accelerate the prevalence of existing risks, across all classes of business. From here, our speakers discussed the results of historic and recent climate change litigation. From this, lessons learned from previous long tail liability exposures will be assessed and whether or not these have been implemented into current underwriting considerations.

To conclude, the speakers put forward a series of recommendations to address the concerns highlighted and the potential opportunities that might materialise as a result.

By the end of this webinar members would have gained an insight into:

  • Why should insurers care about climate change?
  • Historical and more recent case law and litigation relating to climate change in the United States and international jurisdictions
  • What lessons can be learned from previous long tail liability exposures
  • Solutions, opportunities, and objections resulting from climate change to be considered by the insurance industry
