In this IIL cyber, technology and innovation lecture, Teddy Collins provided a primer on the technical foundations of machine learning - the technology that has underpinned almost all recent artificial intelligence breakthroughs. He also explained the significance of some of DeepMind's most high-impact research.

DeepMind is a world leader in artificial intelligence. The company is on a mission to push the boundaries of AI, conducting cutting-edge research that enables scientific breakthroughs and profound real-world impact.

Machine learning systems have recently produced remarkable results, from achieving superhuman performance at a range of games to tackling fundamental scientific challenges. This talk will explain how such systems can master complex problems and will offer insights into the leading edge of AI research.

By the end of this lecture members would have gained an insight into:

  • How machine learning systems differ from past epochs of AI
  • The types of problems that AI is suited to solving
  • Some of the most promising real-world applications of AI today
