How will climate change affect air travel?

In this IIL aviation lecture Dr Paul Williams discussed the impacts that climate change could have on air travel, including increased turbulence and modified flight paths and journey times.

The basis of Paul's presentation was that aircraft do not fly through a vacuum, but through an atmosphere whose meteorological characteristics are changing because of global warming. He explained that the impacts of aviation on climate change have long been recognized, but the impacts of climate change on aviation have only recently begun to emerge. These impacts include increased turbulence, increased take-off weight restrictions, and modified flights paths and journey times. A recent study by the speaker suggests that transatlantic traffic will be airborne for an extra 2,000 hours each year in the coming decades because of changes to prevailing jet stream winds.

By the end of this lecture members would have gained an insight into:

• The two-way coupling between aviation and climate
• How the jet stream is changing
• The expected long-term trends in air turbulence and journey times

Speakers Bio:
Dr Paul Williams was educated at Oxford University, receiving a first-class degree in physics and PhD in atmospheric physics. He has published over 50 scientific papers and two books. His frequent media appearances include the BBC, Sky News and CNN.
