The Thomas Cook Story to 2019 – The inside view

Online event
Thursday, 28 January 2021
4:00 pm – 5:00 pm (UK time)
    • Dame Deirdre Hutton, Formerly Chair (2009 - 2020) of Civil Aviation Authority (CAA)

In this IIL webinar, Dame Deirdre Hutton discussed the failure of Thomas Cook, how it was handled, what the main lessons were and how this is an exemplar of the challenges that can face regulators. She also illustrated how regulators work; how they can improve; what can be learnt; and what the role of leadership is in a crisis.

During her eleven years at the helm of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), Dame Deirdre saw the time bracketed by two substantial crises - first the explosion of the Icelandic volcano in 2010, and then the demise of Thomas Cook in 2019. Dame Deirdre will explain why the handling the first crisis was so much less successful than the second, what the CAA learned from volcanic ash in 2010 and how the CAA has changed as a consequence.

By the end of this webinar members would have gained an insight into:

  • The failure of Thomas Cook and the lessons learned
  • Leadership and resilience in a crisis
  • The future of aviation
