Meet the Council - Tom Mulligan

Currently Managing Director at Albany Insurance Brokers, Tom has been in insurance for just over 10 years now, starting out as an Account Manager at Abaco Insurance Brokers. Tom is passionate about the next generation, with his business running their own Broker Academy, which attracts young talent into insurance, nurtures them through the early stages of their careers and provides support for their CII qualifications.
Find out more about Tom below:
Q: What did you want to be when you grew up?
A: Formula 1 racing driver. Still not given up hope.
Q: Was a career in insurance a conscious choice or wonderful accident?
A: Insurance is quite an underrated industry and there are a lot of people who joined through a family or friend connection who advised of the opportunities available.
I followed my dad into the industry, which felt natural as I grew up listening to stories about his job which I always enjoyed, although I wouldn’t quite say my bedtime stories were tales of a client’s renewal terms or complex claim settlement!
Interestingly my career aptitude test at school placed insurance as one of my most compatible career choices so maybe it was always meant to be.
Q: How long have you been in insurance?
A: 10 years and it has happened in the blink of an eye.
Q: What attracted you to join CII Leicester?
A: I was invited to a Next-Generation networking event with free drinks and I haven’t managed to escape since.
Q: What are the positives of joining CII Leicester?
A: It’s great to meet people outside of the limited bubble of your own organisation and build up your network.
Q: Best & worst thing about insurance?
A: I enjoy the variety of clients we talk to and risks that need covering, which keeps each day different and the job feeling fresh.
The worst thing about insurance has to be Insurance Premium Tax, which I would like to see the Treasury submit a Fair Value Assessment for!
Q: Where is the coolest place you travelled?
Cape Town is probably my favourite destination to travel, ideally in January for some winter sun. The food, drink and scenery is all incredible and there are so many different experiences to try over multiple visits.
Q: What is your go-to karaoke song?
A: I’ll give most songs a go after a few drinks, but probably something nice and short to put everyone out of their misery!
Q: What is your favourite cocktail?
A: Gin & Tonic and I am okay if that is a boring answer!
