In this IIL marine lecture Jane Rumble outlined the governance regimes and UK interests in the Arctic and the Antarctic, and highlighted the range of insurance requirements, challenges and opportunities in the Polar Regions; and the risks of getting it wrong.
Jane highlighted that Polar operations and activities have an inherent level of risk. The different governance mechanisms in the Arctic and Antarctic mean there is also an very different regulatory framework for each region. She noted that the UK has significant interests and activities in both Polar Regions - and global interest in operating in the Poles is also increasing. Jane's presentation posed these questions:
- What does this mean for the insurance industry?
- And what are the insurance related challenges and opportunities - financial, ethical and operational?
By the end of this lecture members would have gained an insight into:
- Governance regimes in the Arctic and the Antarctic
- Range of UK interests in the Polar Regions
- Opportunities, challenges and risks for the insurance industry
Speakers Bio:
Jane has been head of the Polar Regions Department since 2007, having previously been Deputy Head for 3.5 years. A geographer by background, Jane had previously held a range of environmental and social policy jobs in several different Government Departments.
