In this IIL aviation lecture Per Ahl talked about the transition from traditional tower services to the new digital environment. He explained some of the advantages unmanned control towers would bring to small, regional and large airport operations and briefly covered the safety and security aspects of such a solution.

Per explained that the technical systems and business model of control towers has not changed much in the last 70 years. However, with the introduction of disruptive technology, as a Remote Tower system, a new world will be opened, which will make small regional airports reliable, and new airports possible. He forecast that totally new business models could be introduced in the same time as safety and efficiency can increase.

By the end of this lecture members will have gained an insight into:

  • How applicable rules and regulations are applied
  • How distributive technology can give benefits within Air Traffic Management
  • How a digital aerodrome system can benefit society
