The Information Commissioner calls - what to expect

The Old Library, Lloyd's
Friday, 12 May 2017
1:15 pm – 2:00 pm (UK time)
    • Mark Gleeson, Partner (Barrister), Browne Jacobson LLP
  • London Market

In this IIL London Market lecture Mark Gleeson explained how the Information Commissioner approaches the investigation and resolution of data breaches.

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) is undertaking proactive, as well as reactive, investigations into the privacy practices of a wide range of organisations. The ICO has issued heavy penalties against organisations breaching these civil rules and branded them as 'crooks' and 'criminals'.

Proposed changes to the law mean that individual directors, as we as their organisations, could each face penalties of £500,000.

This talk provided practical, legal and tactical advice on managing ICO investigations into breaches of the current law. It also highlighted changes under the forthcoming General Data Protection Regulation.

By the end of this lecture members would have gained insight into:

  • The reality of how the ICO handles breaches
  • The practical, legal and tactical issues to consider
  • The changes brought in by the GDPR
