The Market Cycle

The Old Library, Lloyd's
Thursday, 05 January 2017
1:15 pm – 2:00 pm (UK time)
    • David Flandro, Global Head of Analytics, JLT Re
  • Reinsurance

In this IIL reinsurance lecture David Flandro gave an overview of the most pertinent and current issues in the insurance and risk transfer business.

David outlined how the insurance and reinsurance sectors have been in a period of particularly dynamic change during the last decade with obvious implications for Lloyd's. Recently, there have been signs that the cycle is again shifting. As the industry passes 1 January, a number of issues are becoming increasingly relevant. Third party capital inflows seem to have moderated. Reserving is again becoming an issue for some carriers. Investment yields remain at historical lows in the UK in the wake of the European referendum and many syndicates' profit profiles have changed.

By the end of this lecture members would have gained an insight into:

  • The evolving profile of the risk transfer sector and its implications for Lloyd's
  • The macroeconomic and UK economic issues affecting the sector
  • How insured risk transfer is increasingly the most competitive form of capital for risk carriers and corporate clients
