Global Collaboration, Frontline Results: safety in offshore helicopter operations

In this IIL aviation lecture Gretchen Haskins spoke about the safety collaboration set up amongst competing collaborations competing companies in the offshore helicopter industry. Her presentation included a description of the proactive and strategic approach to delivering those actions that make the greatest difference to frontline safety worldwide.

In her lecture, Gretchen considered now to use the intellect and resources of multiple organisations to drive improvement that would not be possible by individual companies. It looked at an alliance of all key stakeholders to drive breakthroughs in performance. Effective safety performance is delivered day to day in the frontline.

Her presentation also considered safety as a performance improvement activity, rather than a risk management one. Looking at the value of activities in terms of their safety benefit; finding the most effective partnerships between human and machine; and methods for sharing information and best practice worldwide using collaboration tools that allow 24 hour communication amongst stakeholders at all levels from frontline to boardroom.

By the end of this lecture members would have gained an insight into:

• The potential of collaboration to achieve breakthroughs in safety performance
• Use of proactive, performance based methods to improve safety
• Consideration of what good looks like for the human machine partnership as technology advances

Speakers Bio:
Gretchen is the CEO of HeliOffshore, an organisation dedicated to global offshore helicopter safety collaboration. Previously, she served as Safety Director at the CAA, NATS, and has a particular focus on human factors and safety improvement.
