CPD Webinar - A Quick History of Insurance

Friday, 12 September 2025
12:30 pm – 1:30 pm (UK time)

The history of insurance is very wide and very deep. You can trace it back into prehistory, but it was developed into something we would recognise as insurance, by the merchants of medieval Italy.

This webinar will cover the history of insurance from when it was first mentioned in the 13th century through to the 20th century.

Some of the questions that are looked at include:

- How far back can you trace insurance

- How did it develop?

- Who were the earliest insurers?

It will also look at how the Insurance Museum will use these subjects to engage with the public and schools.

Speaker: Howard Benge

Howard Benge is the Director of the Insurance Museum. Howard brings extensive professional museum, archive, and City of London experience.

The Insurance Museum is focused on becoming an educational forum for engaging audiences in the global story of insurance – past, present and future.
