p006 RS 240 - Marine Insurance in the former Soviet Uni

RS 240 - Marine Insurance in the former Soviet Uni

Dramatic changes have occurred in the Former Soviet Union (FSU) since the collapse of communism in the early part of the decade, not the least of which is the way business in general and insurance business in particular is conducted.

With premiums written being a disappointing 1.3% of GDP this is clearly and area of the world with significant potential growth. Despite increasing market interest in the area, detailed information on how insurance business is conducted in the FSU is not widely available.

The report endeavours to correct this by providing an understanding of the recent history of the insurance industry, the legislative changes that have taken place and the current legal framework. It identifies the potential pitfalls whilst highlighting the opportunities available. It also discusses risk assessment and underwriting considerations in some detail and their significance for each class of marine business.

The report is aimed at all those conducting insurance business in the FSU with a specific interest in the marine and energy markets by:

  • Providing a detailed analysis of the Marine insurance market.
  • Examining the economic and social climate and its impact on marine contracts.
  • Identifying the major underwriting considerations in terms of physical and moral hazards and assessing their effect on risk management and controls.
  • Reviewing the changing insurance law and its impact on marine insurance.
  • Identifying the risks and opportunities in these markets.
