Representatives Committee
Aim, Objectives & Method of Operation
Aim
To facilitate effective communication between the Institute’s members, Secretariat and Council.
Objectives
Each Representative will:
1. Work with the Secretariat to help facilitate timely and effective communications with the market sector they represent, primarily by helping the Secretariat to develop and maintain a database of members’ email addresses.
2. Effectively communicate the role of the Institute within the market sector they represent.
3. Foster interest in Institute matters within the market sector they represent, for example, in lectures, new advanced studies and CII exams and study materials.
4. Encourage applications for membership.
5. Feed back to the Institute the views of members the market sector they represent
Method of operation of the Committee of Representatives:
1. The Insurance Institute of London’s Constitution and Bye-laws (Bye-law 6) established Representatives and a Committee of Representatives.
2. The Committee of Representatives is structured to represent all major market sectors, as determined necessary by Council from time to time. The following market sectors are currently represented:
• Chairman (independent of any market sector)
• Brokers (2 members)
• Insurance (2 members)
• Law (2 members)
• Lloyd’s (2 members)
• Reinsurance (2 members)
• Run-off (2 members)
• Loss Adjusters (1 member)
• Insurance Management Consultancy (1 member)
• Education and standards (1 trainer, 1 regulator)
• Young Members (1 member)
3. Each market sector is entitled to nominate two representatives, unless stated otherwise, as full Committee members. When vacancies for representatives occur, members of the Institute may self-nominate. Younger members will be encouraged to participate. The Committee will consider nominations and formal invitations to join the Committee will be sent by the Chairman.
4. The Representatives will elect from among themselves a Chairman, who shall also be an ex-officio member of the Council of the Insurance Institute of London. The Chairman is elected annually but the total period of continuous service shall be in accordance with Byelaw 9.
5. The Committee will meet three times a year; in addition to an Annual Meeting of Representatives with the President post the November Council meeting, the Committee of Representatives meets once in advance of each of the two meetings of Council. In the event of a Representative failing to attend three consecutive meetings of the Committee of Representatives, the Chairman will invite the individual to reconsider his position as a Representative.
